The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is revisiting its 2015 rule that regulated the disposal of toxic waste from coal-fired power plants. Among other actions, the EPA has ordered companies to stop placing ash in unlined ponds since keeping coal ash in unlined storage has long been the threat to drinking water.

When the dust settles, a middle path will be negotiated, and solutions that satisfy all stakeholders will have to be implemented. Using a “1 + 1 = 3” methodology of remedy selection and having the right tools will yield better results.

Why Apply 1 + 1 = 3 in your Coal Ash Basin Closure?

“1 + 1 = 3” is a concept of obtaining greater success by solving two traditional environmental problems at the same time, the combination results in higher success than individual projects.

Since coal ash pond closures are all about BUILDING safe, adequate, and economical STORAGE it makes sense to beneficially reuse the excavated ash at footprint challenged facilities. Logically, using the excavated coal ash to create onsite capacity to property STORE the ash. ALL OF IT!

“You cannot solve this non-traditional coal ash basin closure problem with just a traditional approach.”

Paramount to the success of the remedy, footprint challenged facilities need to have THE RIGHT TOOLS, in order to solve multiple environmental problems.

The Right Tools for the Job

Here at EnCAP-IT we specialize in solutions that maximize the use of space; always by making the most of every single acre, yard, or foot of available land for storage. Our safeBERM®, safeSTORAGE® and VertiCell™ patented, green solutions can use coal ash (other materials also) as fill in a protective, efficient, and economic manner. With EnCAP-IT the answer to the common question “Can we safety store all of our excavated ash on-site?”, is yes we can”.

Tools MATTER

VertiCell™ construction method of a segmented bunker style retrofit system can be completed safer, better, and cheaper than a typical traditional methods of coal ash basin retrofits.

VertiCell™ consolidates, compacts the ash by utilizing the vertical airspace created over a limited area. These segmented bunker style cells are quickly filled, capped, and rendered inert at a much faster pace than traditional methods. Here at EnCAP-IT we refer to this process as Progressive Filling and Progressive Capping.

VertiCell™ Progressive Filling

  • Limits “Double Handling”
  • Reduces Timeframe
  • Smaller Footprint
  • Greater Inventory Control

VertiCell™ Progressive Capping

  • Outside slopes capped using a “shingle” method
  • Outside slopes form bi-directional hydrostatic barriers
  • Individual bunkers capped at a rapid pace
  • Creation of V-Notch bunkers allows greater stability
  • Segment approach provides stability relief on outside slopes

VertiCell™ Method = Cost Control

  • Minimizes Off-Site Transportation Costs
  • Optimizes the use of On-Site Property
  • Closure timeframe is reduced
  • Efficient placement of “off spec”, less desirable excavated coal ash
  • Final (Smaller) footprint = lower Post-Closure care/financial assurance

Here at EnCAP-IT, along with our Partners, we are the leading authority in Encapsulated Mechanically Stabilized Earthen (eMSE) structures like VertiCell™. Let us show how you can benefit from this green, proven innovation. Let’s talk.
