Today’s modern landfills are highly engineered systems that are subject to a tremendous number of regulations. First and foremost safety is paramount to a successful design. However, a balance is made between safety and practicality. It is the ugly truth; landfill design safety is sometimes curbed by space and economics. Here at EnCAP-IT we bring the tools to balance the scales by using the concepts; “Bigger is Better” and “Safety by Saving”.

Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) berms are a practical technique for expanding capacity in existing landfills. Traditional MSE berms are typically costly to implement due to the source, quantity, and preparation of the select fill used. Thus, economizing the berm design is important to reduce these costs while satisfying the appropriate design standard of care. In this process consultants and owners must weigh the costs of design with the practicality of those costs.

Encapsulated Mechanically Stabilized Earthen (eMSE) Berms offers the designer and owner increased flexibility with regards to fill selection, reinforcement, and configuration in their effort to economize the design.

Bigger is Better

Under traditional MSE berm design concepts using less fill results in lower costs, leading to narrower and steeper berm designs. In contrast, an eMSE berm design allows the use of more economical fill materials as well as greater flexibility with regards to berm configuration. The limitations under traditional design are not present, leaving designers to maximize the size and shape of the eMSE berm.

The heavier and wider a berm is, the higher stability safety factors.

Safety by Saving

The more safety, the more you save!

Like the chicken or the egg dilemma of, “which came first: the chicken or the egg?” we can ask ourselves did “safety generate the savings or did the savings generate the safety?”. As vexing as this sounds it is unnecessary, because two metrics operate in the same direction, upwards.

Here at EnCAP-IT we specialize in eMSE solutions that maximize the use of space; always by making the most of every single acre, yard, or foot of available land for storage. Our safeBERM®, safeSTORAGE® and safeREUSE™ patented, green solutions can use beneficial use materials as construction fill in a protective, efficient, and economic manner.
